Much to my chagrin, I’ve never kept a real-life journal. I’m a writer, I have an impulse to share the intricacies of my life, and I have a ridiculous collection of notebooks. And yet—I don’t have the discipline. Never have (though that’s not to say I never will). Instead, I’ve committed to a digital form of creative writing: Sunshine with Savannah, created in 2018, the very same forum you’re reading now.
Something I’m always compelled to document is my journey with fitness. I’m a former athlete and have a complicated relationship with exercise and working out and every time I jump into a challenge (which, thanks to that lack of discipline thing, happens more often than I’d like to admit), I want to track it. I want to record my feelings and victories and grievances and progress. It just seems to help.
So, here it is. Here’s the first week down of my current fitness challenge, of which I’m embarking alongside my husband, Chad: 75 Medium.
Day 1
Vibes
Day one is always a mix of hard and easy. Hard to establish a new routine, but also incredibly easy to get through because it’s exciting and new. I’m praying that I continue to stay this dedicated, and that Chad does too.
Workouts
- Treadmill
- 21 Day Fix Real Time – Cardio Core
Dinner
We had a mix of healthy leftovers, such as ground turkey, quinoa, carrots, broccoli, and roasted potatoes.
Day 2
Vibes
The excitement is still there, plus a little soreness. I’ve enjoyed my time on the treadmill the most (thank god lolol) and have been listening to my one and only podcast, The Garcia Diaries. The time goes by pretty quick that way. I’ve also been feeling extra motivated to clean (especially in the kitchen), which is a great side effect. I’ve been cooking more too, which sours my mood a little (LOL).
Workouts
- Treadmill
- 21 Day Fix Real Time – Legs
Dinner
I made us some ground turkey, roasted sweet potatoes, rice, avocado, and steamed veggies.
Day 3
Vibes
I am staying strong, but am more impressed with Chad keeping up with the challenge. He was able to workout before going to work, which I admire greatly as a sleep-in-at-all-costs kinda gal.
Today I was sore in my legs, which is unsurprising but crappy nonetheless. Good sign though, right?
Workouts
- Treadmill
- 21 Day Fix Real Time – Upper Body
Dinner
Chad made us a yummy stir fry, with rice, broccoli, and chicken. (I was relieved not to cook, lol.)
Day 4
Vibes
Today I mostly felt motivated. In fact, I went out of my way to cook a full and very involved lunch (marinated tempeh and roasted sweet potatoes with a fruit smoothie), which was so, so, so out of character. I also listened to an audio book during my workout…also for the first time. Kind of cool of me.
I didn’t get to workout as early as I wanted (I went on a creative kick and couldn’t stop writing, so I pushed my first workout back quite a bit), which forced both workouts to be back-to-back. BUT I did it, and that’s the biggest win of all.
Workouts
- Treadmill
- 21 Day Fix Real Time – Pilates
Dinner
Chad made us salsa chicken bowls! Chicken, salsa, rice, beans, veggies.
Day 5
Vibes
Excited to be still going, though today was the hardest yet to do that second workout. (I blame the cardio.) I modified my Beachbody workout pretty heavily, but a workout is a workout and I’m happy to jump start my weekend on a strong note.
Workouts
- Treadmill
- 21 Day Fix Real Time – Cardio
Dinner
We had delicious salsa chicken enchiladas, made by Chef Chad. 🙂
Day 6
Vibes
Motivated by a fresh Alani Nu package (including their Witches Brew energy drink, protein bars, and fit shakes) and Chad’s get-it-done attitude, I met my goals. Proud of myself for every day that passes by.
Also: tonight we’re going to the movies! We are both budgeting plenty of calorie room for buttered movie theater popcorn. 🙂
Workouts
- Treadmill
- 21 Day Fix Real Time – Dirty 30
Dinner
Enchiladas, round two! Well, Chad had enchiladas. I really only had the popcorn, lol.
Day 7
Vibes
I’m excited about Day 7! I’m proud to be here on Day 7! I’m thankful to my body, and showed it love by choosing yoga today. (Yoga is extremely hard for me, by the way, which is a tragic turn of events for this former dancer.) I have made numerous fitness goals for moving forward (i.e., more flexiiblity with specific yoga stretches), and I’m looking forward to meeting them.
Workouts
- Treadmill
- 21 Day Fix Real Time – Yoga
Dinner
We ate left-over enchiladas, and they really hit the spot. (Again.)
One week down
Wooooo!!!! Let’s keep the party going strong. At the start of Week 2, we both weighed in and were happy with what we saw: I lost three pounds, Chad lost two.
But more importantly, we are slowly getting into better habits. I’m most proud of my reading progress—10 pages almost always turns into much, much more; when I’m a reader, I feel like the best version of myself. Otherwise, I’m feeling less stiff and craving dessert, and Chad and I are more interested in cracking a cold La Croix over a beer. Small wins will get us to where we want to be. 🙂
