In my quest for re-becoming an athlete (long story short: my process to reclaim my former identity as an athlete and redefine an important piece of who I’ve always been), I’ve done some cool things.
For example:
I’ve worked out in 115 degree saunas.
I’ve pliéd, planked, brawled, and burpee’d (many of which were barre-side).
I’ve used a paddle to serve, dip, and dink.
And most recently, I’ve explored two class offerings at Spire Fitness – a gym located in Milwaukee’s Third Ward neighborhood.
About Spire Fitness


I was initially drawn to Spire because of their bread and butter: their spin classes. Here, they are called Ride. When I received the opportunity to try them out (as part of a MKE Hummingbird campaign), I felt immediately excited.
Spire is located in Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward, and the vibes are sleek, urban, and boutique fitness. The studio is open early in the morning and after 5 p.m., ideal for work schedules during the week.
In addition to spin classes, Spire also offers TRX conditioning and strength, along with rowing.
Spin


I ended up taking two different spin classes, to make sure to get an accurate feel for riding.
First, Chad went with me on a Sunday morning. We quickly discovered that the class was high energy. This created a great connection to the music and we rode a mix of paces. Because of this, it also prompted many giggles; we discovered that my husband has no ability to keep a beat or follow a tempo.
For my second class, I returned alone (lol) for a weeknight class with a different instructor. Here, I discovered how much classes can vary depending on who’s teaching. I really enjoyed the pace of more hill-oriented endurance rides, in contrast to more of the fast-tempo ups and downs.
TRX Conditioning

For the TRX class, I met up with a friend (another local content creator, foodie @kelli_calkins) and we did the circuit-based workout together. It was more of an intimate setting with a small group structure, and I loved having immediate access to, and coaching from, the instructor.
The class had a mix of circuit exercises. We utilized dumbbells, body weight, TRX straps (for pullups, pushups, squats, etc.), balance balls, and medicine balls.
The music was good, the exercises were difficult but doable, and Kameelah the instructor was fantastic. After class, Kellie and I hit up the Public Market for a juice and a ginger shot, and that was was hard to beat.
Ongoing
Spire has left me wanting more—the spin classes were a fun way to blast some cardio in my life, and I loved the ability to tune completely into the music and my body for 45 minutes, forgetting everything else. Though I was surrounded by people, I felt the strongest connection to myself as an individual.
I hope to make Spire a semi-regular treat for myself; I’d love to take spin classes once or twice a month and keep improving and growing in this area of fitness.
