I’ve had the lyric, “This ain’t Texas, ain’t no hold ’em” in my head for weeks. (And no, I’m absolutely not complaining.)
Recently, I came up with a brilliant plan: the only way to live with this song in my head would be to fully embrace it. I needed to dress up like a springtime cowgirl and dance to TEXAS HOLD ‘EM on repeat in my living room.
And I knew that if I was committing to boots and daisy dukes and hair high to heaven, my face might as well match, too (if you give a mouse a cookie, right?).
So: I did. In the spirit of future sunshine, blue skies, and Beyonce-inspired line dances, I tested out a beauty routine. Additionally, I built my get ready with me (GRWM) on some new-to-me Beautycounter skincare products. My friend Amanda is a Beautycounter rep and hooked me up with several products to try, and it was so fun to tailor my routine around them.
Here’s how my TEXAS HOLD ‘EM, dancing in my living room, Beautycounter-based look went.

Skin prep (with Beautycounter)
For me, the first step in getting ready always comes down to skincare. I’m glad I learned this pretty early on in adulthood—the first few layers of product on your face should be designed to protect your skin.
This is where my new Beautycounter products really came in handy!
After cleansing my skin with micellular water, I then used the Beautycounter vitamin C brightening serum, Beautycounter water cream moisturizer, an SPF lotion, and then a makeup primer. I also used a primer for my eyelids as a final prep step.
Each of the Beautycounter products left a positive impression! The vitamin C serum was smoothing, and my skin felt fresh and dewy. Plus the citrus-turmeric smell is potent in the best way.

As I followed with the water cream moisturizer, I really fell in love: it’s thick and creamy, with an immediate plumping effect. I have some texture on my face from acne scarring, and I noticed a slight difference! This was my favorite item, because of both the fresh feeling, and also because of its relevance. I know it’s something I can and will use every single day; moisturizer is my go-to, daily must.
At the end of the night, I used Beautycounter’s night cream. Another instant favorite! I’ve been implementing it into my nightly routine ever since.
I’m immediately hooked. Beautycounter’s a clean beauty company, which gives the extra (significant!) benefit of knowing these products really are good (and safe!) for my skin.
I’ll be placing any future Beautycounter orders with Amanda, though I anticipate these jars lasting a while. A little goes a long way, and these products are on the spendy side!
For my getting ready purposes, the skincare prep ensured a successful makeup application, with happy skin underneath.

Makeup

As far as this GRWM routine was concerned, the sun was shining. I matched the seasonal tone with a pops of color on the lids, cheeks, and lips, while giving my face more coverage than usual. It was a night out face for me, even if the reality was more private (again, dancing alone in the living room).
I snuck in one last Beautycounter product here: the liquid eyeshadow tint, in satin golden olive. It was beautiful but pretty subtle: it took a couple applications to get the color to come through. I loved how convenient a liquid shade is, and how it was buildable.
Because of the skincare prep, the makeup application process was smooth (literally) and easy. A key for a night out look—especially one that involves dancing and warmer temperatures—is applying setting powder to my greasier spots. For me, it’s all about the forehead.
Overall, I loved this makeup look and routine! I think it’s still pretty low-maintenance and approachable, while still giving a boost.

To go match a spring and summertime TEXAS HOLD ‘EM aesthetic, I went big with my hair. I used a wand to create voluminous curls. Then, I let the curls cool down, set them with hair spray, and later shook them out (I did not brush them).
