Have the warm feelings of the holidays taken a while to jump start this year? I’ve heard many people say that 2018 hurled by; so much so, it barely feels possible that fall is over, Thanksgiving has long passed, and Christmas is right around the corner. For some, the season has come with a flash and a blur, and hasn’t seemed very festive.
If that’s the case, it might be time to rev up those holiday engines. It’s the best time of the year: this season is pretty specifically about giving, appreciating one another, and being close with the people in our lives.
Sometimes I like to think about what Christmas means to me. Over the years, the landscape of my holiday celebrations has changed drastically: my older brothers have families of their own and live all over the world, my parents recently moved away from my hometown, we’ve long since been religious, and now I’m married and am splitting up the festivities by holiday. Last year especially, when I was spending my first ever Christmas away from my parents, I needed to focus on the meaning behind the season, rather than fixate on the single day.
Change is inevitable. Traditions and celebrations sometimes evolve, morph, or stop one day altogether. People get older, families begin, and locations tend to change. This year, I plan on embracing those changes while keeping in mind the true spirit of Christmas. It comes down to generosity, joy, and gratitude. I hope you join me.
From classic movie one-liners to sentiments representing the spirit of giving, here are some of my very favorite holiday sayings.
Bah humbug no more.
