This is 27 days late, but I think a belated anniversary post adds that high-priced quality similar to anything aged and brined and properly barreled. (It’s somehow better.)
Chad and I have been together for 12 years (I guess our relationship has also gone through lengthy aging, brining, and barreling—a true, fine 2011 vintage), and each seems better than the last.
Across the span of our 12 years, a pair of teenagers grew up and into a love that’s deep and unyielding, steady and evolving, sweet and curious, planned and surprising. We’re not kids anymore, but I’m not sure I’ll ever outgrow the way my heart beats in a he-keeps-me-young rhythm reinforced by history, hope, and magic.
I’ll admit that the jokes I make at our expense—for example, calling myself a “child-bride,” or rolling my eyes a little when I explain that we’re high school sweethearts—are more about levity than honesty. They’re my subconscious hedging; I don’t like to brag and it’s hard not to feel like our story puts us into a winning category of longevity and charm.
The truth is, I love our roots and our history and every moment we’ve spent together. I love love, and I love ours the most. I’d wish for even more time if I could, because even the rest of our lives simply isn’t and won’t be enough.
To my husband: I love you and I’m glad the kid versions of us understood how to preserve, nourish, and cultivate what we found all those years ago. Happy 12 years on this march toward forever. 🖤
