When it comes to skincare, I’ve been on a long-term journey toward self-love, improvement, and experimentation. Getting a chemical peel treatment is the latest development in my years-long self-care plan.
I went to Magnolia Aesthetics in Greenfield, Wisconsin, where I received a VI Peel treatment. Here’s how it went.
What is a chemical peel?
A chemical peel is a professional skincare treatment that uses a chemical solution to exfoliate the top layers of the skin.
This process encourages cell turnover, revealing smoother, brighter, and more even-toned skin underneath. Chemical peels come in different strengths—light, medium, and deep—depending on the level of exfoliation and skin concerns being addressed.
The VI Peel is a medium-depth peel designed to improve fine lines, acne, hyperpigmentation, and overall skin texture. It contains a blend of TCA (trichloroacetic acid), salicylic acid, retinoic acid, and vitamin C, making it a great option for a wide range of skin types.
My experience

Magnolia Aesthetics is located in the gorgeous Avery and Birch building in Greenfield, Wisconsin, in the Milwaukee greater metro area. The building and suite are gorgeous, and there’s even a cafe on-site for a post-appointment treat.
At Magnolia Aesthetics, my treatment started with a skin assessment to determine if the VI Peel was right for me. Serena was knowledgeable and welcoming, and explained that a series of peels could produce the results I’m looking for: targeting my acne scarring.
After cleansing my skin, the chemical solution was applied in layers. There was a slight tingling sensation—a little spicy in the moment—but overall, the process was quick and painless. It took about 15 minutes from start to finish.
After the peel was applied, my skin felt tight, with a slight warmth. Honestly, it felt a little like a sunburn. I left with the peel solution still on my face (a very orange look), along with a post-peel kit with detailed aftercare instructions.
What to expect after a chemical peel
Immediately after the treatment, my skin had the orange peel solution on it for four hours, which was unsightly but felt fine.
After four hours, I was able to wash off the solution and begin the aftercare process. The VI Peel aftercare kit comes with detailed instructions and steps, which mostly included a gentle cleanser, anti-itch cream, post-peel towelettes, and SPF. I downloaded their app, which sent reminders and kept track of daily progress photos.
Here’s how the peeling process unfolded.
- Day 1-2: My skin felt tight, and a slight darkening appeared around sensitive spots on my face.
- Day 3-5: Peeling started around my mouth and chin, then gradually spread to other areas. It looked like light, flaky sheets of skin coming off—nothing painful, just dry and noticeable.
- Day 6-7: The peeling slowed down, revealing fresh and glowing skin underneath.

It was key to avoid picking or peeling the skin! That was the top piece of advice to avoid scarring myself, and also the hardest temptation to avoid. Other recommendations were to avoid heavy sun exposure and exercise for a few days post-treatment. I used the provided skincare products for a week, and discontinued my own skincare leading up to the appointment (I stopped retinol use 10 days prior).
Recovery and results

By the end of the week, I noticed that my skin appeared brighter, with a more even skin tone; a big change from my usual red undertones. Additionally, my cheeks in particular felt softer and smoother, with some refinement in my skin texture.
If these are the results after one chemical peel, I’m excited about the prospect of getting more! The full benefits of the VI Peel will continue to develop over the next several weeks as collagen production is stimulated.
In the meantime, I’ll be moisturizing, wearing sunscreen, drinking plenty of water, and enjoying my fresh skin.
Thanks to Serena and Magnolia Aesthetics for hosting me and for the wonderful peel treatment!
