If you’ve been exploring ways to improve your skin’s texture, tone, and overall glow, chances are you’ve come across microneedling as a treatment option.
As someone who has struggled with “problem” skin for most of my life (first acne, then the subsequent and persistent acne scarring ever since), microneedling has been on my radar for quite some time. This treatment has offered me a lot of hope—knowing that there are ways to help with my skin’s texture and overall health.
Thank you to True Skin by Lauren for hosting me! Here’s a breakdown of my recent microneedling treatment experience.
What is microneedling?

Microneedling—also known as collagen induction therapy—is a minimally invasive treatment that uses tiny, sterile needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin.
These micro-injuries trigger the body’s natural healing response, boosting collagen and elastin production—the two proteins responsible for keeping skin firm, smooth, and youthful.
Over time, microneedling can help improve:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Acne scars and texture
- Hyperpigmentation and dark spots
- Enlarged pores
- Overall skin tone and elasticity
It’s a popular option for permanent results that relies on the body’s own system, and one that I’ve always been interested in to address my large pores, acne scaring, and overall skin texture.
The microneedling treatment

A typical microneedling treatment starts with a consultation to assess your skin and goals. From there, the provider will cleanse your skin and apply a numbing cream to keep things comfortable (I did not feel a thing!).
Using a specialized microneedling device (often a pen-like tool), the provider creates tiny, controlled punctures across the skin. The depth can be adjusted depending on skin concerns—deeper for acne scarring, more superficial for texture and glow.
The entire process usually takes about 30–60 minutes, depending on the treatment area.
There may be a slight scratching or vibrating sensation, but thanks to numbing, it’s very manageable. Some areas (like the forehead, cheekbones, or the nose) can feel a bit more sensitive, but overall, the numbing cream does its job.
During my session, Lauren used a skin oil to prep my skin, and I added on a mask afterward, to help jumpstart the healing process. It was quick and easy, and she talked me through every stage of the treatment, answering any questions throughout.
Microneedling recovery

One of the biggest reasons people love microneedling is that there’s minimal downtime.
Right after a microneedling treatment, skin will likely look and feel like a mild sunburn—red, slightly swollen, and warm. This is completely normal and part of the healing process.
Everyone’s different, but in my experience, the redness lasted for about three days. The first day was the most intense! Lauren gave me aftercare products to use (a gentle cleanser, a calming moisturizer, and a serum mask), and I made sure to only use those products for four days while my skin healed. I also did not put anything on my face (makeup included) throughout those four days.
Here’s a general recovery timeline:
- Day 1: Redness, tightness, and possible sensitivity
- Day 2–3: Slight dryness or flaking may occur
- Day 3–5: Skin begins to calm and smooth out
- 1–2 weeks: Noticeable glow and improved texture
Most people can return to normal activities right away, but you’ll want to:
- Avoid direct sun exposure
- Skip intense workouts, saunas, and heat for 24–48 hours
- Stick to gentle, hydrating skincare
- Avoid makeup for 3-5 days
The skin may feel tight or dry as it heals, but that’s a sign that collagen production is underway.
And while there might be a noticeable glow within a week, the real results build over time. Collagen production continues for weeks to months, which is why a series of treatments is often recommended.
