5 Things to Do in Scottsdale, AZ

Scottsdale, Arizona is a warm and sunny oasis that I was happy to explore during our recent spring-time vacation. We came specifically to watch spring training baseball, but ended up spending far more time in the city, outside the stadium.

There were so many unexpected treasures within the city limits; the juxtaposition of massive cacti and swaying palm trees blew our minds, as well as a two-pronged sense of both adventure and relaxation. There’s so much to do, and plenty of time to do it.

How to Spend Your Time in Scottsdale Other Than at the Baseball Fields

1. Explore Old Town

A definite must-do activity is exploring the quaint and charming Old Town area of Scottsdale. Sitting super close to the Phoenix and Tempe communities, Old Town is a centralized square that is perfect for roaming. The streets are lit up by overhead lights, dazzling and inviting visitors to wander and go into the many bars, restaurants, and local shops. 

If possible, take an Uber or Lyft to Old Town, to avoid the crowds and parking situation. There are also scooters available to rent, which make for a fun and whimsical addition to the experience.

Pro-tip: if you have time, step into Su Vino Winery for a tasting. Check Groupon, too. Their infused wines are sweet and fruity and absolutely delicious.

2. Grab a Drink

After a hot day in the sun (or during, if you’re feeling feisty), take a break by grabbing a drink. As Colorado beer lovers, my husband and I were impressed by the number of breweries at our disposal. I highly recommend getting a flight of beer, to really experience the full range of a brewery’s menu. 

Pro-tip: try out Mesquite River. These guys also have a stellar Groupon special and a vibe that’s inviting and welcoming. Plus, great brews!

3. Try Your Hand

Feeling lucky? If so, Talking Stick Resort and Casino is a super fun option for anyone interested in gambling. Though Chad and I discovered that we should avoid slot machines (goodbye, $40), we had a blast wandering the floor, enjoying a Taco Tuesday special, and drinking a discounted beer with our spring training ticket stub. 

Pro-tip: don’t force anything. If you’re not interested in gambling or aren’t in the mood, don’t play. It’s really okay to be there and not spend loads of money. 

4. Take a Swing

There is a mass appeal over at Topgolf that is almost hard for me to explain; there’s literally something for everyone to enjoy at their luxury, fun, air-conditioned facilities. You don’t have to like golf (or have ever played) to really get into and appreciate the experience that mimics a driving range.

It’s high-tech, fun, and laid back in the best ways. You take aim, swing your club, track your points on the screen, laugh when you whiff, and sip a delicious cocktail in the comfort of your group’s pod. Topgolf is something I love to do, whenever I can. 

Pro-tip: if you bring a large group of people, it’s super budget-savvy, because you can all split the hourly price. Even more so if you go at non-peak times, like mid-week or in the morning. 

5. Head to the Pool

An undeniable draw to Arizona, especially during the chillier months elsewhere, is the warm weather. Lounging by the pool is a significant part of the appeal. 

When we were planning our lodging, we decided to save money by staying at an Airbnb; it was affordable and in a central location, which was perfect. The only thing missing? A pool that we felt like we could use.

To remedy this situation, we signed up for ResortPass, and ended up spending an entire day at the Arizona Grand Resort’s Oasis Waterpark. Though next time we might splurge and just stay at a resort, the pass was an amazing way to experience the amenities of a high-end hotel without the nightly fees. We had such a great time, especially floating round and round on the lazy river. For families with kids, ResortPass is a super affordable option.

With unlimited sunshine and plenty to do and see, Scottsdale is a fun-packed destination right up our alley. We’ll be back.
